When I learned that Rainee was interested in performing again and was in need of a guest director, I jumped at the chance! It
had been far too long since she had been on the stage. I left work on a Friday afternoon armed with a stack of scripts to begin
the selection process. Once I read
The Insanity of Mary Girard, I stopped searching.

I felt the themes of the play - spousal abuse, stigma of mental illness, men exerting power over women - were not confined to
the colonial period. So you will see a mix of periods from Contemporary to Art Deco to Victorian in dress and manner and
theatrical styles from melodrama to Theatre of the Absurd with film techniques to boot! The play has been described as a
‘dream in one act’, so the lighting is dim and spotty at times and highly focused on certain characters at other times.

This complex script has been challenging for the actors, and I appreciate the trust they have placed in me and my vision for
this piece - especially the times when they believed I crossed the line!

I hope you enjoy this highly theatrical piece!
