Welcome to the SSCC Theatre spring production of John Patrick’s The Curious Savage. This show was chosen as a contrast to our fall production of Howard Brenton’s Bloody Poetry. Both Plays have a common thread — characters who are outcast from society, in one way or another, due to radical beliefs and/or actions. Bloody Poetry was a very poetic, macabre vision of this idea. However, Curious is a comedic interpretation of the consequences of stepping outside the norm of society.
As I stated in the fall, The Roman writer Horace believed theatre should teach as well as please. Bloody Poetry certainly had a great deal to teach us ... especially since it was a biographical adaptation of the lives of writers Percy Bysshe Shelley, Lord Byron and Mary Shelley. And I believe Curious Savage will please our audience tremendously. This comedy is very family friendly — the story is timeless and the characters extremely endearing ... well, most of them.
Our third choice for this season of radical behavior was to produce Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins, a musical featuring the infamous people who ever attempted or succeeded in the assassination of a United States president. Unfortunately, we are unable to cast the production at this time. But the show ... a show ... must go on! I am pleased to announce that SSCC Theatre’s summer production will be Lone Star and Laundry. I hope you’ll return to our theatre August 22 - 24 to share in the experience.
